This Thing you Call Excercise

I ran tonight. I didn’t die.

It makes me cringe to say this, but after 2 months of running 3 or so times a week, I crave running. I need to run. I get, well twitchy when I don’t run. A few weeks ago, I added in a few free weights.

I have worked up to 3 minutes of running at a stretch, and every so often, I berate myself just a bit, thinking that 3 minutes is not much of anything. People run 100KM’s, and well, I can 3 whole minutes.

Yaay me ?

And I ask myself how I expect to run 5Km in 2 months and 8 days.

Tonight, I ran 3 minutes, walked 3 minutes, and then ran another 3 minutes. Lather, rinse, repeat. On Thursday I will run it a bit faster and with an incline. That’s 3 times longer than I could run 2 months ago.

And if worse comes to worse, I’ll run the race in 3 minute increments.

So really, yaay me!

You ran. You met a goal. You improved. So seriously, well yeah…YAY you!! :D

Yaaaaay you, indeed. I’m just starting out again too. Beginning something like this is the hard part, so hey, I repeat: yaaaaaaaaaaaaaay you!

When I am participating in my own (lame) self-directed exercise program, I feel distinctly twitchy when I skip a day. It’s like I have restless leg syndrome, and I have to be a couch potato for a week to make it go away. Guess my joints and muscles prefer exercise.

The point of the 5K is to have a goal. Is your goal to finish it, run it all, or just not die during it? Each of those goals requires different expectations. I would say you’re well on track for the first and last suggestions – so keep working, and the middle part will be yours as well.

    Yay you!

It is a “yaaaayyyy you”, I have found this apparel company from the US called One More Mile. They have some great saying on their shirts such as “You don’t have to go fast. You just have to go.” or “Race day strategy: start off slow and then back off.” and the one that I have and love “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”

The best thing about running is that its all about your own personal best. This will be your first race, it will be your point to work from. I almost never run the entire distance, I am a firm believer in run/walk. The last half I did I ran in 5min/1 min intervals because that works for me. If you run for 3 and walk for 3 for your race I say good for you, because you are out there doing it!!

Yay you!! I’m in couch potato mode right now, but on & off, when the weather is good & it’s light out after dinner (April-October), dh & I try to go walking a couple of times a week for 30-45 minutes. After awhile, you DO miss it when you skip a day!

  6. I am proud of you! I am off for a hike this afternoon with my cousin and our mutts. How is Mr.Spit and his new exercise regimen of snowboarding going?

  7. Brown Owl says:

Really really proud of you Mrs Spit! Well done!

I wanted to add my two cents….
The run walk stagey really works. I ran an entire marathon doing that. I ran 8:30 minutes/walk 1:30 minutes. I also ran my fastest time during a 5K using that run/walk. I am not fast by any means but I ran a 9:30 minute mile doing the run/walk thing during the 5K. I used to think of it as cheating but it works, it really really does. Try it one time.
Congrats on starting running. It’s amazing, isn’t it? I saw a shirt during the Chicago Marathon that said “The woman who starts the race isn’t the same as the woman who finishes the race.” How true is that?
I also need to mention that I read your blog and wanted to thank you for sharing.

Yaaaaaaaay, you! Did you ever think you’d be CRAVING running? It didn’t take very long, really.

I’ve heard about a whole marathon training program that uses the interval approach you’re using. From what I’ve read, it’s really effective.

    Good on you!

    Way to go Mrs. Spit!

  11. Yes Yaay you! Look at what you’ve accomplished. You went from strongly disliking running, to craving it. From not being able to run to run in 3 minute INCREMENTS. You’re running for ALOT longer than 3 minutes. How long to you walk/run? 30 minutes? Thats 15 minutes of running. You totally should be proud of yourself.

  12. Seraphim says:

Good on you! A book I’ve just finished reading in my prep for a long run later this year actually advocates the walk run theory! So by my reckoning you should be up for a marathon after the 5km. I am very proud of you. I know how hard it is to start and keep going xxxx

  13. Jess says:

I am seriously impressed with people who run. I feel like I’m going to die every time I run more than ten steps. I did go for a good hike Sunday though. Trying to do more of that this year.

  14. Jamie says:

Yay, Mrs. Spit!! Once you get to the point where you ‘crave’ running, you are over the hump. You have graduated to the point where it makes you feel good instead of feel like you are going to die. I hope I get over that hump soon.

    You CAN run that 5km!!

  15. WhiteStone says:

Once upon a time, when life was in the pits, I ran. It saved my sanity. Somehow it burned off that edge, that edge of anxiety, calming me. I don’t run anymore. But I remember how good it felt.

  16. Aunt Becky says:

Funny how that works, isn’t it? Congrats! I love working out.

  17. geohde says:

    I Don’t Do exercise.

    It shows :)

    Yay you!!!

We just joined the gym. I was ooooooh so proud of myself for doing the treadmill and bike for 15 minutes each. It is just a step at a time :)

(and I didn’t drown during water aerobics either.)
